President Trump will ‘divide and conquer’ in Europe

1 minute read

Donald Trump will “divide in conquer” in Europe when he returns to the White House in January, a Democrat spokesman in Brussels has said.

Gregg Svingen, a spokesman for Democrats Abroad in Belgium, emphasised that a second Trump term probably have a “splintering” effect on the European Union and “cripple” its ability to function.

“What it means for Europe is a bit of instability,” he told Brussels Signal at an election event in Brussels on November 5.

“They’ve seen Donald Trump before in 2016, so that administration is a known entity in one sense. In another sense, there may be fewer guardrails because he doesn’t have to worry about being reelected.”

Svingen added that the EU would likely be split on how to deal with Trump, with such a division set to be exploited by the soon-to-be 47th president.

“Some of the member states [will be] more open to speaking to Donald Trump.

“Donald Trump is historically a dealmaker, and so what does a dealmaker do? Divide and conquer.

“I think it will probably have a splintering effect on the EU and severely cripple the EU’s ability to negotiate as a singular entity,” he added.
