In a landmark collaboration, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Parliament are uniting their efforts to revive democratic engagement and informed dialogue ahead of June 2024’s European elections.
President Vasco Alves Cordeiro of the CoR and President Roberta Metsola of the European Parliament met in Strasbourg February 28 to formalise their partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), underscoring their shared commitment to bridging the gap between Brussels and local communities.
The MoU outlines a series of joint initiatives spanning all 27 EU Member States, aimed at galvanising citizens’ participation and amplifying their voices in the democratic process.
President Cordeiro affirmed the pivotal role of local and regional authorities in driving EU policies and initiatives, emphasising policymakers’ need to amplify their voices in the decision-making process.
“Cities and regions are the beating heart of our Union – let’s make the voice of all territories count,” Cordeiro said.
President Metsola echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of citizen empowerment in shaping the democratic landscape of Europe.
“Every decision made at the European level directly influences our life, making voting the most important tool at our disposal to shape the future of Europe,” she said.
By mobilizing elected representatives at both the regional and national levels, the CoR and the European Parliament seek to foster inclusive debates and empower communities to shape the future of Europe.
Key elements of the partnership include collaborative events, media campaigns, and social media outreach efforts designed to resonate with citizens across diverse regions and municipalities.
With several countries holding European elections at the same time as regional and municipal polls, the need for coordinated action to enhance voter engagement has never been more pressing.
As part of their collaborative efforts, the CoR and the European Parliament are leveraging platforms such as together.eu to facilitate constructive dialogue and knowledge-sharing among citizens.
By harnessing the collective wisdom and expertise of local leaders, they aim to cultivate a deeper understanding of European issues and foster a sense of ownership among communities.
The signing of the MoU precedes the 10th European Summit of Regions and Cities, to convene in Mons, Belgium, on March 18 and 19.
Against the backdrop of global challenges, the summit will serve as a forum for policymakers and stakeholders to explore innovative solutions and chart a course towards a more resilient and inclusive Europe.
With the collective strength of local and regional authorities, the CoR and the European Parliament are poised to propel Europe towards a future shaped by collaboration, dialogue, and democratic renewal.
As citizens prepare to cast their ballots, the stage is set for a new chapter in Europe’s journey towards prosperity and solidarity.
