United States President Donald Trump has claimed to have ended the war with Iran, saying Tehran has agreed never to build a nuclear weapon. The Islamic Republic has yet to confirm that any agreement has been reached.

Trump made the declaration on June 11 during a telephone rally for Burt Jones, the Republican candidate for governor of the US state of Georgia. “We ended the war with Iran today,” he told supporters, describing Iran’s pledge not to acquire a nuclear weapon as the entire purpose of the talks and 95 per cent of the deal.

The remarks came hours after he cancelled air strikes that had been scheduled against Iran for the early hours of June 12, in what would have been a third consecutive day of attacks. He said on social media that he had called off the operation following talks at the highest level of Iranian leadership.

Trump said an agreement was in its final stages and could be signed within days, possibly in Europe. The news outlet Axios reported that four US Air Force planes had been sent to the continent to prepare for a ceremony, with Vice President JD Vance expected to sign on behalf of Washington.

The reported understandings would extend an existing ceasefire by at least 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping within 30 days and allow Iran to resume oil exports under a phased review of sanctions. Nuclear negotiations would continue during that period.

Trump also told reporters at the White House that Iranian supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei had approved the deal, which he said had been backed by several regional states, including Israel, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Iran has not responded to the latest assertion. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the country’s competent institutions were still examining the negotiations and had not reached a final conclusion.

Any outcome would be announced with “full transparency”, he said, in remarks carried by the state news agency IRNA.

The war erupted in late February after the ceasefire that ended the 2025 Twelve-Day War between Israel and Iran lapsed on February 28. The US and Israel then launched fresh strikes on Iranian targets, opening a conflict that has run for more than three months.
