Spain: with no public funding, The Party is definitely Over now

Spain’s populist insurgent Se Acabó la Fiesta party will now lose its public funding, despite receiving three MEPs in European Parliament elections and 2 per cent support in polls.

Spain’s Budgetary Office said Luis ‘Alvise’ Pérez Fernández’s party, whose name translates to The Party is Over, has not filed the correct campaign spending forms.

This means Alvise’s party will lose close to one million euros, an amount which could have proved a windfall for a small political party still finding its way in Spain’s political system.

According to Spanish law, political parties are eligible for state funding, in an amount proportional to the votes they obtained.

The public funding is meant to help parties remain independent from lobbies, and competitive in the political system.

Nevertheless, Alvise’s supporters claim the party intentionally abstained from requesting the funds, to prove it wants to stand against the political establishment:
