Anne-Sophie Frigout, MEP for the French right-wing Patriots for Europe party, had had her office in Reims vandalised.
She claimed that members of the “ultra-left” orchestrated the attack during the night of July 2.
Windows were smashed, excrement smeared on the walls and the anti-police slogan “ACAB” (“All Cops Are Bastards”) was sprayed across the building’s facade.
“This isn’t mere vandalism; it’s a politically motivated act of intimidation by the violent ultra-left, which is growing increasingly active in Reims,” Frigout stated on July 3.
The National Rally (RN) MP said she believed she was targeted after publicly speaking out against the Antifa movement within the University of Reims.
“This attack comes after I denounced, in recent months, the ‘anti-fascist’ assemblies organised at the University of Reims and the €43,000 in municipal subsidies granted to an association that serves as a conduit for these groups.”
According to Frigout the current municipality “has created the breeding ground in which those who think they [Antifa] can do whatever they want thrive”.
Following the attack, Anne-Sophie Frigout wants to defund these radical left groups.
She announced that if she were elected the city’s mayor — she is running for office in 2026 — she would “end municipal subsidies for any organisation linked to the violent far-left”.
“These cowardly abuses do not impress me; they strengthen my determination to become mayor of Reims and call time on the game,” she added.
Frigout also vowed to “strengthen the municipal police force by increasing the number of armed municipal police officers to 200, supported by an anti-incivility squad”.
“I will always defend freedom of expression, democracy, and the safety of every resident of Reims. I will never give in to those who use threats and fear.”
This was not the first time that politicians’ offices have been vandalised or political events shut down, underlining to many the polarisation and radicalisation prevalent in French politics.
