Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist, has been rumoured to be involved in secret plans for “civil disobedience” on October 5 in Brussels drawn up by climate protestors.
In leaked correspondence seen by Brussels Signal, activists taking part in a public green demonstration scheduled for that day say that they are also planning a separate “blocking” act in the city.
They claim that Greta Thunberg has already “confirmed” that she will take part in this separate demonstration, which they say will constitute an act of “civil disobedience”.
Such claims have been circulated to an unknown number of media outlets in Brussels under the condition they do not unveil the protesters’ plans before 2:30pm local time on October 5. Brussels Signal was not one of the publications to whom the plans were circulated, so is not bound by the embargo.
The exact location and nature of the action remain unknown, with the activists saying they will reveal their plans to the contacted media at the “last minute” in a future press release.
As of writing Thunberg has yet to confirm her presence in Brussels on any of her social media channels. Brussels Signal has approached the activist for comment regarding the alleged “civil disobedience” plans and regarding whether or not she will be involved.
Rumours of Thunberg’s appearance come amid attempts by pro-green agenda campaigners to force Brussels into further crackdowns on fossil fuels.
Organisers for Saturday’s protest say they plan to meet at Place du Luxembourg at 1:30pm October 5, with the march planned to arrive at Merode at the eastern end of the Parc du Cinquatenaire at 2:00pm.
Alongside Thunberg — who is publicly listed as being scheduled to speak at the event — the march will allegedly be led by “farmers, refugees, youngsters [and] people from Global South”.
“This action is authorised, so bring your friends and family and let’s raise our voices for a just ecological and social transition!” they add.
