Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico is back in office after surviving an assassination attempt in May.
“Progressive Liberal media and naysayers, sorry I survived, but I’m back,” he said in a Facebook post on July 9 with a photo of himself in his office.
Before officially resuming work on July 9, the 59-year-old made a public appearance at a harvesting event at Voderady Agricultural Co-operative on July 8. He looked to have lost weight and was seen walking with a crutch.
After surviving being shot at close range on May 15, the Slovak Prime Minister said he now intended to get back to business as usual.
During the meeting with Slovakian farmers on July 8 he said the government would maintain its ban on the import of certain agricultural commodities from Ukraine to Slovakia.
“We will not fall for fashion trends and we will not retreat when it comes to imports of agricultural products from Ukraine. It continues to be true that there is a certain list, we call it the sanctions list, of certain products that we do not intend to import from Ukraine,” he said.
“I explained to him [Ukrainian’s PM Denys Shmyhal] that we cannot destroy Slovak agriculture. I told him that we understand that Ukraine has a problem and needs help.
“The only thing we are prepared to do for you is to create a corridor through Slovakia that will guarantee the export of Ukrainian agricultural products,” he added.
Following the shooting incident, a suspect was arrested and charged.
